Wearable art edition! Dyeing in Indigo Workshop with Ameera Pernebsati Lys (Formerly know as Cindy Lys)
Come learn a variety of resist methods using Ancient Japanese techniques known as "Shibori": Twist & Bind! Design one-of-a-kind Textiles! Experience the magic and learn how chemistry meets Indigo! This workshop will focus on wearable art. We encourage folks to bring clothing from home. A t-shirt and a pair of socks will be provided. All students must bring a dish-pan, long rubber gloves and scissors from home!
Overview:
Students will learn a variety of resist methods through experimentation in the ancient traditional use of "Indigo Vat Dye". Indigo is one of the oldest natural plant-based dyes in the world for coloring fabrics and used today to color blue jeans. Students will create artistic designs using traditional Japanese Shibori techniques of tying, knotting, accordion and binding!
Students will learn how to mix a synthetic Indigo Vat Dye and discover how acids and bases meet value, through "the chemistry of color". Students will experience how Indigo Vat Dye solutions produce "magical" fiber-reaction results through oxygenation when dye is exposed to air.
